Hilal-i Ahmer

Red Crescent Society

These cards were printed for promotional and fundraising purposes at different times (1915-1917) but for simplicity I am considering them as a single series. There are at least 24 cards.

There are some recurring motives in the cards:
- A subseries of 10 cards shows the care at the war zone (field hospitals), such as carrying an injured man, the ambulance carriage, tents in snow, camels carrying supplies (In the Field). 2 of these cards may be printed at different times. An eleventh card, with a red insignia is a special print of one of the cards.
- A second subseries of 4 cards shows various patients receiving care from the nurses at the hospital (Under Care).
- The third subseries of 3 cards shows an amputee getting up from the bed (1), receiving a prosthetic leg (2) and standing in full uniform saluting the sitting nurse (3) (Amputee).
- The fourth subseries of 4 cards shows the red crescent ship in a search and rescue operation during the Dardanelles war in 1915 (Floating Hospital). A fifth black and white card may seems to have been printed at another time locally.

Additionally, there is one card showing the "Red crescent flower" sale on Galata Bridge. Another two cards show Sultan Reshad in to different printings (One printed in 1915 - likely a predecessor to the colored cards).
