The National Defense Society was established by the high ranking government employees to provide non-political solutions to the economic, social and political problems that emerged in the Ottoman State after the Tripoli and Balkan wars. To support the fighting army they were helping the families of the soldiers, establishing hospitals in war zones, and finding volunteers for the wars. In 1914, together with Hilal-i Ahmer (Red Crescent) and the Society of Navy, the most famous societies of the time, the National Defense Society was elevated to the "the associations and societies serving the public interest" status. The society's activities became a model for the civilian resistance organizations in Turkey during the aftermath of World War I and for many activities carried out thereafter. These postcards were printed from the paintings of Bahriyeli İsmail Hakkı.
